Evaluation Activity 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (e.g teaser trailers, poster, magazines)

Our film poster challenges conventions in terms of it being black & white. Almost all of the film posters we have looked at including The Dark Knight and Indiana Jones, have included some form of bright colour such as blue or red to catch the viewers eye, however we decided that our black and white poster is effective for the mystery type thriller film our teaser trailer advertises. Some posters we did find that were black and white included Eagle Eye and I'm Not There, but even these had some kind of coloured writing. Our poster followed the conventions of other real film posters in terms of the writing that is included. Most film posters including Eagle Eye, include details of the director, producer etc and also have a tag line which we include. An example of this is the tag line "Why so serious?" on the batman posters. Also to make the poster look authentic I have included small logos such as Warner Brothers and Dolby Digital, like most posters do.
Our film magazine front cover follows the conventions of film magazine Empire. By researching real Empire front covers we found a similar font and included the same colours. To make it look more realistic we included a barcode, price, date and website address. We also included Empires trademark "the world's biggest movie magazine" underneath the heading. We used lanuage that Empire uses such as "free, exclusive, special, amazing, behind-the-scenes and previews".

In Frame 1 above, we used the Warner Bros logo to make our teaser trailer look more realistic as all teaser trailers have been made by a company. This is shown in Frame 1 below so we followed conventions. In Frame 2 above, the costumes we used were casual and representative of what normal teenage girls would wear. In Frame 2 below, by wearing smart clothing such as a suit, tie and hat it gives the impression that they are important business men. We have also followed conventions here as the female characters are dressed in casual clothing and the 'baddie' male character is dressed in plain, black clothing to show this. In Frame 3 above, we used an over the shoulder shot of the male character watching the house. In Frame 3 below, there is a shot of somebody watching a family inside their house filming them. While we have included an over the shoulder shot to show that there is somebody in the story watching the house, they have used an actual camera shot that somebody has taken to show that the character in the story is watching them, not just the audience. So, while we have used a similiar idea of a character in the story watching somebody else, we have developed this by including the shoulder and head of the character in the shot. In Frame 4 above, we used a prop which was a threatening note and is a main part in the plot as he is stalking her. In Frame 4 below, the sign says Elm Street which relates to the title of the film so is an important prop used to inform the audience. This challenges conventions as our props are completely different and threats are more likely to be heard on a phonecall than written down. In Frame 5 above, we put in a title 'Isn't who they said they were' and in Frame 5 below there is a title 'Isn't what it seems', our titles followed conventions as they are often used in trailers to both inform and engage the audience. In Frame 6 above, there is a close-up on a hand opening the door and in Frame 6 below, there is also a close-up on the hand opening the door. We have followed conventions as by using a close-up this informs the audience that this is an important part in the storyline. Because it is something as simple as somebody opening a door, it gives the impression that the person opening the door is going to affect the storyline in some way, good or bad. In Frame 7 above, we used a close-up shot of a knife dripping with blood and in Frame 7 below, there is a close-up on a hand bringing out a gun. We have used typical conventions of the stalker/thriller type genre by including a weapon and by including blood on the knife, the audience will assume that somebody has been injured or killed. In Frame 8 above, a shot of a text message saying 'I'm worried about you, please listen to me. I haven't seen you in weeks!', which informs the audience and engages them in the storyline. In Frame 8 below, a mobile phone is also used which is fairly common in film's of today as they are used in everyday life to stay in contact with people. In Frame 9 above, for the title of our film 'Deceit' we used a simple block white font on a black background to make it stand out, similiar to the title used in 'The Bourne Ultimatum'.

Evaluation Activity 2

How effective if the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We were originally going to use a photograph of Amy for our front cover but we realised as shes not a recognised actress it was quite dull to use that image. Instead we decided to use the same image as our film poster, which worked out well because using the same image means that the two texts complement each other. Also in terms of appealing to our target audience i think that using the same image helps in advertising the film because they may recognise the image on the front cover because they have seen the poster or recognise the poster because they've seen the Empire front cover. Although this image is not in our teaser trailer, I think our teaser trailer ties in with the poster and front cover because a similar shot of the hooded figure is in the teaser.

Another way in which i think the combination of the main product and ancillary texts is effective is because they all create the same atmosphere of enigma code (which is used a lot in the thriller genre) to appeal to our target audience of thriller/mystery fans. The teaser trailer throughout creates this enigma with the knife dripping blood, the threating note, the worried phone message and the hooded figure. This relates to Todorov's theory of equilibrium, because in our teaser trailer we do not see the 5 stages of equilibrium (we only see disruption of equilibrium), it makes the audience want to see the film to see how the situation is resolved. The film poster creates enigma but in a different way. The hooded figure creates this mystery as we do not know who it is, but also the sentences such as "be careful who you trust" and "coming to get you soon". The front cover also appeals to our target audience because it says "the most anticipated new thriller."

Evaluation Activity 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
.
We showed our film and ancillary texts to the rest of our class and they made some useful comments which made us learn about what we could have improved and what they liked about them. We filmed our class giving us feedback and are uploading the video. We learned that our teaser trailer did make them want to see our film which is good as that was our aim.
This is what our class said:

Other comments people have made include:

"I think your camera work is really good, I liked the over the shoulder shot of the girl picking up and reading the note. I also really liked the fact you used tracking shots as it really gives the impression she's being followed."

"I think its good as it does leave a lot of mystery but its still dramatic enough to make you want to watch it, I like how its quite short and quick, which makes it more exciting. The only thing I would say is I couldn't hear the speech well at the beginning."

"Much drama and suspence is created with the selected music playing over the entire length of the film with limited speech. The angles from which the film is shot in the middle section does give the impression of somebody watching and adds extra tension. The close up shot of the knife in the final scene and the harsh sudden cut to the film title is an effective and appropriate ending."

"I really enjoyed the teaser trailer and it did make me want to go and watch the film, the only things I think you could have improved on was the sound at the beginning and it was quite hard to read the text on the phone at the end, but I think the music worked well with your film."

"I think its really good, but one improvement I think you could have made better, was maybe not including the knife at the end as it made me think it was a bit obvious she was going to be killed/stabbed."

Evaluation Activity 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used Adobe Premier to edit our teaser trailer. We learned how to include title's in our film, take out background noise that we did not want to be included and put in non- diegetic music. We also speeded up some of the shot's to make the teaser trailer more fast-paced. We included Warner Bro's presents at the beginning to make it look more realistic and we used a zooming in transition rather than a still picture that we originally had.

We used Blogger to conduct our questionnaire in order to get feedback from our target audience about which elements they prefer in teaser trailers. This also helped us decide on our final idea and enabled us to include what our target audience wanted. Also, we used Blogger to present all our work and to help us organise our time well.

We used Youtube in some of our research by watching teaser trailers similiar to what we wanted our's to be, in order to pick out certain elements that we could use.

We used Google to find images of other film posters and magazine front covers. Also, we found images of costumes and locations to help give us an idea of how we wanted our film to be.

We used Freeplaymusic.com to find non-copyrighted music that we could include in our teaser trailer and that flowed well with the film.

This is a picture of the camera, tripod and microphone we used when filming.

Final Film Poster

This is the final version of our film poster.

Filming Finished

We have now completely finished all the shot's needed for our teaser trailer. The film poster is also finished so now we just need to finish the editing of our film, adding music and title's into it. Then we just need to decide on what picture to use for our magazine front cover.

Wednesday, 10 March 2010

Film Poster

We have now decided that our film poster is only going to have one image and this is the start of our editing. We are going to add more to make the poster look more realistic, by including such things as a website for our film and credits at the bottom.

Thursday, 4 March 2010

Progress

We have filmed the shot's for the end of the teaser trailer of a knife with blood dripping of it and have now organised to finish our filming completely by next wednesday as that is when our actor is available, so we can film the happy shot's that are going to be used at the beginning of the teaser trailer. We have edited together all the material we currently have, we just need to add title's inbetween the shot's and the Warner Bro's logo at the beginning. We have almost finished our film poster, we just need to decide whether to include other elements such as quotes and names of the actors, but the picture, title and tagline have all been put together.

Film Poster

We were thinking of doing a poster similar to this in that its made up of two images like the Eagle Eye poster, however we have decided to just use the second picture on our film poster.

Tuesday, 2 March 2010

Progress

We have now decided to change our music as the original music we were going to use sounded too much like the x-files theme tune. We looked at websites with free music and chose one which suited our film.

Monday, 1 March 2010

Teaser Trailer

We are going to include one of these shot's at the beginning of our teaser trailer to make it look more realistic.

Film Poster Ideas

Our film poster is going to include one picture at the top of a 'happy time' and then a second picture like one of these of an over the shoulder shot.

Wednesday, 24 February 2010

Progress

We have not yet been able to film the happy shot's used at the beginning as our actor has not been available. But, we have been editing together all the material we already have and planning the font and images we are going to use on our film poster and magazine front cover.

Thursday, 11 February 2010

Music

As this music is non-copyrighted and tense and creepy we are going to use it in our film.

We used http://www.video2mp3.net/ to convert it into audio.

Monday, 1 February 2010

Progress

We have now finished most of our filming and we only have to film the shots used at the beginning of the teaser trailer of the happy couple. Also, we were thinking about how we could have a more dramatic ending, as at the moment it just ends in his hand opening the door and then fades to black. We will now probably add another shot at the end of the teaser trailer after he has opened the door, of a close up on his hand holding a knife dripping with blood, but we will leave the audience still wondering what actually happened and if she is dead or not.

Fonts For Our Teaser Trailer

As our film is quite scary we could use blood red font for some or all of our titles. We quite like the idea of just having one word in red to emphasize it. We think the word "Deceit" the title of our film should be in the same font on the teaser trailer as it is on the film poster. I think the font should either be the Lithos Pro Regular or Tajan Pro.

Time Planning

Today we are going to start filming at 1.30 and we have until 3.30 as our main character is available to film then. We are going to see how much we get filmed today but if we need too will organise another time in which we can film the remainder of it.

Fonts For Our Film Poster

We have finally decided on a name for our film and these are some fonts we might use on our film poster. We wanted to keep the font fairly simple so that it didn't draw the focus away from the main picture too much, but also gave the title a bit of an edge, so was not a commonly used font.

Progress

We are almost ready to film but have a few small things left to do. We need to finish our storyboard and script and decide on casting. I am going to take pictures of possible actors/actress which include James, Sophie, Amy, Rosie, Adam & Louisa. We can't start filming yet because of the snow but we are hoping to start filming on friday.

Props

These are some of the props we are going to use in our film. The girl in our film is going to be talking on the phone, have an engagement ring and will find this note on her doorstep.

Teaser Posters

So far we have looked at film posters, but as ours will be a teaser poster we have decided to find some examples of these. The Superman, Indiana Jones and Batman posters look really simple yet effective, but we're not sure we could do ours in this way because unlike these films, our film will not be a well known brand such as Superman. We could however not give much away in terms of the name of the film and the date of its release, for example the Cloverfield poster works well because it is a powerful image (we could try to create a haunting image like this) with just a release date. Not much is given away about the film at all and the poster is intriguing, making the audience want to find out more. I like how these film posters are dark which also makes them seem quite mysterious, we could try to create this in our poster or given that our film starts off happy and romantic and then turns dark, we could try to reflect this in our film poster.

Monday, 14 December 2009

Progress

Things left to do:
- Take pictures of props and upload
- Take pictures of other locations we are using - the park and shot of the front door and Lucy's house from the opposite side of the road
- Decide on actors
- Finish and upload storyboard
- Finish script

Researching storyboards

Before I start drawing up the storyboard, I have done some research. On another year 13 blog I found some links to storyboards and websites on how to create a good storyboard.
This website is useful for information on storyboards.

Here is also a video on storyboard making

How To Storyboard Your Film - IndyMogal:

Above, are some pictures of storyboards which might help us figure out how we would like ours to look. Some are much more complex than others, some have simple drawings with writing or very detailed drawings. We could probrably achieve something like the first picture.
We may make a slideshow similiar to this where she has taken pictures of possible locations and put them together into a video. This would be good to help us decide on where exactly we want to shoot and which kind of shots we want to include.

Progress

Now that we have got some feedback on our polls, we are going to make a pie chart to show our results. We have also researched some location photos on the internet and posted these alongside pictures we had taken ourselves of alleyways and staircases. I have looked at storyboards on other media blogs to get an idea for how we want to do ours and we have decided to draw the pictures on paper and then scan them onto the computer.

More Teaser Trailers

I have looked at the following teaser trailers that are similar to how we would like ours to be filmed.

Avatar Teaser Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYurk_p-4-Q&feature=related

We like this teaser trailer because like how we want to film ours, it starts off with slow music and gradually builds up to much faster music. We like the fact that it creates a lot of enigma and doesn't give much about the narrative away, but we do know what type of film its going to be (fantasy) which is something we would quite like to do with our film. Also, we weren't planning of having much speech in our trailer, and this trailer of Avatar is the same. Something we would do differently though is that this seems like an actual trailer rather than a teaser trailer, so we would probably make ours shorter than this.

Clash Of The Titans

The length of this teaser trailer is about right as its only about a minute long, but despite this it includes lots of action. It is very fast paced from start to finish and doesn't include any long scenes, which is what we wanted to do on the second half of our teaser trailer. Like Avatar, not much about the actual storyline is given away but we do know its very action-packed which would appeal to the audience of action film fans. Like this, we can try and get across to the audience in our trailer that our film is a thriller/mystery in order to appeal to fans of that genre.

Toy Story 3

This teaser trailer is completely unlike the other two trailers we looked at, it features no actual footage from the film, is around a minute and a half long and includes a scene that has been shot specifically for the trailer. We don't know anything about the narrative of the film, but the trailer relies on the well known characters of the previous Toy story films, this is quite an effective trailer because 'Toy story' is a well known brand so not much more is needed as it already appeals to fans of Disney films. We wont be able to shoot our teaser trailer in this way, because we do not have a well known story or characters, therefore we have to rely on our storyline.

Valentines Day

We wanted to look at a romantic comedy teaser trailer as our film wont have the comedy but will have some elements of the romance included. This trailer is more like the Toy story 3 trailer in terms of length. It is effective because it gives away just enough of the story for you to want to go and see it and find out more, which is what we want ours to be like. The pace of the film is different to how we would like ours however as the pace in the teaser trailer is the same throughout. Unfortunately we cannot use copyrighted music in our teaser trailer like they have done. The actors in the film are the main focus of the teaser trailer with many well known names in the titles. One thing we could do, which we like that they've done in this trailer, is include a title that is relevant to the narrative of the film so the title of the film will stick in your mind. They have titles saying "Comes a day in the life.... of love" and "Save the date" which relate both to the day the film is released and the title Valentines Day.

Draft Of Script

We start off with a long shot of the two characters from behind walking along hand in hand in a park. Happy music is playing.

Cut to:
Close up of girls face, smiling & looking happy.

Medium shot of man proposing, down on one knee with jewellery box.

Close up of girls hand, with an engagement ring on her finger.

A medium shot of girl on the phone, looking excited.

"oh my god. I'm getting married"

It fades to black and suddenly tense music begins. We have a tracking shot of the girl walking to her door. We then see a high angle over the shoulder shot of the girl holding a threatening note. "I'm watching you" We then have a long shot from the other side of the road as she turns around looking worried.

The pace then builds up and the music gets faster as we see lots of quick shots of..

The man is in a hood so you cant see his face.

Progress

Our idea is developing well and we have now got an idea of the types of shots and scenes we would like to include in our teaser trailer. We have taken pictures of locations we would like to shoot in and have got examples of music we would like to use, but have not decided for definite yet. Things we have left to do include: casting, planning a storyboard and a script if it is needed. We have looked at teaser trailers with a similar narrative to our story, but still need to look at teaser trailers which are shot in the way we would like to shoot ours. We are also in the process of getting feedback on our ideas and doing a questionnaire for our target audience. After writing up a few questions for our questionnaire, we decided it would be a better idea to make a few polls on our blog, as it would be easier to send a link to people and gain feedback from their answers on the polls rather than sending out a questionnaire.

Other Film Magazine Front Covers

So far we have only looked at Empire magazine so we decided to look at other film magazines to see how they compare and so that our Film's front cover will follow the generic conventions of a film magazine. These two front covers are from a magazine called Total Film. It is less recognizable than Empire magazine because the font used on the front cover changes along with the layout of the features. Like Empire magazine, Total Film also uses one main image to catch the audiences attention and although it does not do it as much as Empire, Total Film boasts that it is "The Ultimate Movie Magazine" and uses sentences such as "Free Posters" to persuade the audience to buy it. Overall I think Empire is more effective, but there are similarities between the two.

- Yes
- No
-Maybe

4) In a teaser trailer, how much of the storyline do you think should be given away?

- Not much, remain a mystery
- A few snippets
- Most of the storyline
- All of the storyline

- Background music
- Voice-over
- Speech from characters
- All
-Other

Feedback

From what we've done so far, we know that our teaser trailer is going to be about a film where a man and woman are in a relationship and when they break up he goes crazy and vows to get revenge on her, its a thriller-mystery-stalker type film and we are going to include tracking shots of him following her home and creeping around, he is going to be in dark clothing and her in feminine colours to make her seem more vulnerable. We are not going to give much away about the man or use any shot's of his face in order to build up lots of suspense about the character. We thought about maybe filming her opening a letter or holding a note saying "I'm sorry, please dont leave me" or something along those lines to show the audience that they've broken up due to something he's done. We are thinking about starting the trailer all happy, showing the couple in a long shot from behind, walking hand in hand through a field and then the shot's getting faster, darker and more sinister looking. We have presented this idea to people and gained some feedback.
"What's good about your idea is that it's a bit different to any horror film, because it is a thriller and you're not planning on not giving away the whole story, people will be intrigued to find out what happens. I think you should definately try not to give away much about the man because it will be effective if people are wondering who he is or what he looks like."
"It sounds like a good movie to me, I like everything about that idea, so I cant really think of anything you could change."
"I think your idea sounds really good and your planning seems to be coming along well"

Researching Other Media Studies Blogs

http://lewishyatta2mediastudies.blogspot.com/

They have analysed film magazine front covers and film posters in great detail, including arrows pointing to specific aspects and then descriptions about what they each include. They have also used a questionnaire to find out what type of trailer their target audience would like to see. Then they have analysed the results they gained and put them into a graph, asking questions such as; What elements do people look for in a good film?
Making a questionnaire and gaining feedback on our idea is definitely something we want to include, we have already gained feedback from people in our media class, but we also need to gain feedback from people out of school. We will also make a questionnaire asking people what kind of elements they would like to see in a teaser trailer and then depending on the results, we will incorporate these into our teaser trailer.

http://the180cursehasablog.blogspot.com/

They have looked at film magazine front covers and gained a lot of feedback about what they should include on their own front cover, they have also considered the font they will use and colour scheme, how big the images are going to be and included the date on the front of the magazine and an issue number to make it look authentic.

Inspiration

These top four photos are of staircases that I found on the internet and are similiar to what we want to include in our teaser trailer. The first photo is similiar to the one I took from the top of my stairs as it is also a high angle shot.

The top two photos are ones I have found of an alleyway how we might like ours to look. Underneath there is a photo Lucy took of an alleyway near her house and the road that she lives on. The alleyways are quite similar which is good although the top pictures look more dramatic because of the effects of the camera. The first picture is more like the one Lucy took because the alleyway is square. We could include a scene when the man is following the woman home or down the alleyway. We could use tracking shots so that it is from the point of view of the man following her. It is quite light in these pictures but we could film these scenes when its starting to get dark, so it would seem more dangerous.
These two photos are of an alleyway that goes underneath the train station in Ashtead, we could include a scene where the man is following the woman walking home through the alleyway. We could use tracking shots so that it is from the point of view of the man following her. It is quite light in these pictures as they were taking during the day, but we could film these scenes when it is just starting to get dark, so it would look more scary.

These are photos I took from the top of my stairs, we will use shot's like these to make the victim look more vulnerable because it is a high-angle shot and to give the clear impression that there is someone watching and following her. There are also shot's taken from between the bars on the stairs to convey that the person who is taking the pictures does not want to be seen.

Pieces - Chase & Status

This music video has a similiar storyline to our teaser trailer, as it is about a relationship gone wrong, and the woman wanting to get revenge. She send's him video footage which includes clips of his birthday party, when they were together and happy, then the rest of the video is her trashing his flat. This is something we want to incorporate into our teaser trailer to show them as a happy couple at the beginning and then how things change and turn nasty. Also, the actual song is something we may use in our teaser trailer as the lyrics relate well to our storyline.

Tear You Apart - She Want's Revenge

This would be good music to include in our teaser trailer as it sound's very creepy and would work well with our storyline that he want's revenge on her.

Dead Celebrity Status - If These Wall's Could Talk

The music we want to include in our teaser trailer will not necessarily be scary, but a song that build's up well and conveys the way that the man is feeling towards the woman.
